HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT ARTIST FOR YOUR CONCERT OR EVENT POSTER
A great poster starts before anything goes to print.
It starts with the right artist.
Concert and event posters live at the intersection of artwork, promotion, merchandise and memory. The finished piece needs to represent the artist or event while giving the audience something they genuinely want to take home.
Finding the right creative voice can make the difference between a poster that simply displays information and one that becomes part of the experience.
START WITH THE PURPOSE OF THE POSTER
Before choosing an artist, decide what the poster needs to accomplish.
Will it promote the event before it happens?
Will it be sold as merchandise?
Is it being created for one specific performance?
Will it represent an entire tour or festival?
Is it intended to become a limited edition art print?
A promotional poster may need to prioritize clear event information. A collectible concert poster can give the artwork more room to lead. Some projects need to accomplish both.
Understanding the purpose helps determine what kind of artist and design approach the project needs.
LOOK FOR THE RIGHT CREATIVE STYLE
The best artist is not simply the person with the largest audience or most recognizable name.
Their style should connect naturally with the music, event, venue and audience.
A psychedelic illustration may be perfect for one artist and completely wrong for another. A clean graphic approach may work beautifully for a modern venue series but feel disconnected from a roots festival.
Review an artist’s previous work and ask:
Does the style fit the artist or event?
Can the artist handle typography and event information?
Does the work remain strong as a physical print?
Can the artist create something original without losing the identity of the client?
Would the audience want to display the finished artwork?
The goal is not to follow whatever style is currently popular. The goal is to find the visual language that belongs to the project.
GIVE THE ARTIST A USEFUL CREATIVE BRIEF
Artists need direction, but they also need space to create.
A useful poster brief should include:
Artist, band or event name
Venue and city
Event date
Required logos and credits
Poster dimensions
Intended audience
Visual references
Themes to explore or avoid
Important deadlines
How the poster will be used
Share any existing brand materials, photography, album artwork or previous posters that provide helpful context.
References should communicate tone and direction. They should not ask the artist to copy someone else’s work.
DISCUSS THE PRINT BEFORE THE DESIGN IS FINISHED
The final production plan can affect the artwork.
Poster dimensions, paper, colors, special finishes and edition details should be considered while the design is being developed. Waiting until the artwork is complete can limit production options or require unnecessary revisions.
When design and printing are connected from the beginning, the artist can make decisions with the finished physical piece in mind.
PLAN ENOUGH TIME FOR REVIEWS
Good artwork needs a realistic timeline.
The process may include initial concepts, revisions, final approval, file preparation, proofing and production. Every additional person involved in approval can affect the schedule.
Confirm who has final approval before the project begins. Consolidated feedback helps the artist make useful revisions without receiving conflicting direction from several people.
CLARIFY ARTWORK RIGHTS AND CREDITS
Before approving the project, make sure everyone understands how the artwork can be used.
Discuss whether the design will appear only on the poster or may also be used for social media, advertising, apparel or other merchandise.
Artist credit should also be clear. Credit the person who created the work on the product listing, website, social posts and case study whenever appropriate.
Supporting the artist behind the poster adds meaning to the finished piece and helps connect their work with a wider audience.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE AN ARTIST READY
Some artists, bands, venues and event organizers know they want a poster but do not know who should create it.
That is completely normal.
ShowPosters offers in house design and is connected with some of the best poster artists in the business. We can help match the project with a creative voice that fits the music, event, audience and production goals.
That means the artwork and printing process can stay connected from the first idea through the finished poster.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Start by defining what the poster needs to accomplish. Then choose an artist whose style fits the project, provide a clear creative brief and consider the final printing process before the design is complete.
The right artist does more than make the poster look good.
They help create something that belongs to the show.
