HOW TO PREPARE ARTWORK FOR POSTER PRINTING
Great printing begins with a properly prepared file.
Before submitting concert or event poster artwork, confirm the final dimensions, resolution, bleed, colors and file format. Handling these details early helps protect the artwork and prevents production delays.
START WITH THE FINAL SIZE
Create the artwork at the size it will be printed whenever possible.
If the finished poster will be 18 x 24 inches, build the document at 18 x 24 inches before adding bleed. This makes it easier to evaluate typography, image quality and spacing accurately.
Changing proportions late in the process can lead to unwanted cropping or empty space. Confirm the final format before completing the design.
USE HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES
Raster images should generally be prepared at 300 DPI at their final printed size.
An image may look sharp on a phone or computer screen but still appear blurry when enlarged for printing. A small image taken from social media or a website usually does not contain enough information for a large poster.
Logos and illustrations should be supplied as vector artwork when available. Vector graphics can be enlarged without losing sharpness.
ADD BLEED
Bleed extends the artwork slightly beyond the final trim line.
This prevents thin white edges from appearing if the design reaches the edge of the paper. A common bleed allowance is 0.125 inch on every side, although the required amount can vary by printer and project.
Keep important text, logos and event information safely inside the trim line. Bleed should contain background colors and images, not critical content.
CHECK THE COLOR SETTINGS
Screens display color using RGB light. Many printing processes reproduce color using CMYK inks.
Some bright colors visible on a screen cannot be reproduced exactly in print. Converting artwork correctly and reviewing the color setup before production can reduce unexpected changes.
The appropriate color profile may depend on the printing method. Confirm the required settings before submitting the final file.
PACKAGE YOUR FONTS
Missing fonts can change the appearance of a design.
Convert final typography to outlines when appropriate, or package the required fonts with the artwork. Keep an editable version of the original design before outlining anything.
Pay particular attention to small event details. Dates, venues, ticket information and artist names need to remain readable at the finished size.
REVIEW THIN LINES AND SMALL TEXT
Very thin lines and extremely small text may not reproduce as expected.
View the design at its actual printed size rather than relying only on a zoomed screen view. Check fine details, sponsor logos, legal text and distressed textures carefully.
If something is difficult to read on screen at actual size, it may not improve after printing.
USE THE REQUESTED FILE FORMAT
Print ready PDF files are commonly accepted because they can preserve dimensions, fonts, images and vector information.
Depending on the project, the printer may request an Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or other working file. Always confirm the preferred format before sending final production artwork.
Avoid screenshots, compressed social media images and files exported only for web use.
CHECK EVERYTHING ONE LAST TIME
Before submitting the file, verify:
Final dimensions
Bleed
Safe margins
Image resolution
Color settings
Spelling
Event date
Venue information
Artist credits
Sponsor logos
Edition details
File format
A technically correct file can still contain an incorrect date or misspelled artist name. Production checks should include both the artwork and the information inside it.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Build the artwork at the final poster size, use high resolution images, include the required bleed, protect important content inside the trim area and submit the requested file format.
If you are unsure about any specifications, ask before exporting the final artwork.
